Grotte di Castellana

At around a mile from the centre of Castellana-Grotte, there are the marvellous “Grotte di Castellana” known throughout the world for their splendid caverns and alabaster formations. Discovered in 1938 by Professor Franco Anelli, (the first exploration was actually carried out by Vicenzo Longo from Castallana at the end of the 18th century) the karstic cave complex is formed by various caverns which extend for over 2 miles and is adorned with stalactites and stalagmites of rare beauty which culminate in the Grotta Bianca with its incomparably beautiful alabaster caskets of brilliant white calcite. It is not without reason that this chamber has been defined one of the most beautiful caves in the world.
